I’m thrilled to be sharing this devotional I wrote for (in)courage that’s out today! If you’ve been around for a while, you know this story well. If you’re new around here, I’m happy to report that I’m typing this from my dearly beloved home with only a few new scratches and dints from the five of us who now happily occupy the space.
Below is a preview, but you can read the complete post by clicking here and joining me today over at (in)courage…
We haven’t been home in over 240 days and it’s not because we’re traveling the world. We hadn’t planned to be gone this long when we headed to the beaches of Florida last June.
It was a storm, the kind that is utterly predictable in Oklahoma and yet somehow still ridiculous, that dropped a massive tree on top of our house while we peacefully slept in a hotel room traveling home from a week of sunshine. When we arrived the next day, our cozy corner of the neighborhood had turned into a hub of generators mixed with chainsaws and more tree debris than a photo could possibly convey. I pushed back the tears welling in my eyes as my neighbor embraced me. How could wind move such a massively anchored tree? And how would we even begin to clean this up?
In the midst of all the chaos, a dear friend sent me a voice-memo prayer. Sweaty from no electricity and an afternoon of anger-racking tiny branches, I let her voice play into my earbuds while I wandered the backyard: “God, you care about the spaces we occupy.” As she spoke those words, I wondered if they were true. Does our actual physical context matter to him? Does our home really matter to him? This loss was nothing compared to other parts of my story, yet I found myself wondering if God really cared about this seemingly lesser loss. The next few weeks became characterized by searching for that one pair of shorts, the kitchen spatula we accidentally packed away, and stories in scripture that would answer my burning question: God, do you really care about the spaces we occupy?
